Project Description

…this is an easy, interesting and wonderfully visual tour for those with an appreciation for history and colonial architecture

Once you disembark from the ship you will walk 100 meters to the exit at the main gate. Please walk past the many tour buses owned by the ship, where Julio Tours Guide will be waiting for you with a sign with your name on it. In order to ensure everyone receives the most value from their time please leave the ship and find us in a timely fashion.

We will begin our tour in a comfortable air conditioned vehicle and a one hour drive to the city of Leon. On our way, we will stop so you can take pictures of three of Nicaragua’s most beautiful volcanoes, San Cristobal being the largest and still active to this day.

Arriving in Leon, we will take a short sightseeing tour by car to give you an idea of the layout of the city. Then together we will park and explore this fascinating old city up close on foot. The walking tour will last one hour. We will start at one point of Leon City and continue walking to different sites including the main square. We will pass by some emblematic buildings and by our impressive Cathedrals built hundreds of years ago in the Spanish time. We will visit the bustling central market where the locals buy their fruits and vegetables, local traditional meals and have the chance to buy everything from cigars, coffee and souvenirs from local artists.

At this point, you will have 45 minutes to walk freely while you explore at your own pace and photograph a city that has been a favorite of visitors for hundreds of years. You can also enjoy a cold beer or some Nicaraguan coffee, which is said to be among the best in the world. What makes Nicaragua so attractive to many visitors is the warmth and friendliness of the local people.

After your free time we will meet again and continue our walk to the Ortiz Gurdian Art Gallery. This gallery holds a treasure for the eye to behold. Opening on December 6, 2000 the Ortiz Gurdian Gallery is one of the most impressive galleries in all of Central America. A collection so vast the Ortiz family had to have four buildings to display it. You will see paintings from Armando Morales, one of Central America’s most prominent artists. Humberto Calzada, a famous Cuban artist along with many others including the great “Picasso”.

After walking for this time we will have worked up an appetite and it is time to eat. We will enjoy lunch at a local restaurant with time to relax before we continue head back to Corinto where your ship will be waiting for you.
