Project Description

… this is an easy, interesting and wonderfully visual tour for those with an appreciation for local culture, history and colonial architecture

Once, you disembark from the ship Julio Tours Guide will be waiting for you on the pier with a sign with your name on it. In order to ensure everyone receives the most value from their time please leave the ship and find us in a timely fashion.

We will begin our tour in a comfortable air conditioned vehicle and a 90 minute drive to the city of Granada. On our way, we will stop so you can take pictures of Lake Nicaragua, Madera and Conception volcanoes, the latter of which is still active to this day.

Arriving in Granada, we will take a short sightseeing tour by car to give you an idea of the layout of the city. We will then park and explore this fascinating colonial city up close. Starting with a visit to Guadalupe Church and various cathedrals built hundreds of years ago by the Spanish all of which have cultural, spiritual and artistic significance. We will have the opportunity to step inside and breathe in the magnificent Fresco paintings and statues that inhabit all the beautiful cathedrals. We will walk by the bustling Central Calzada Street with the locals where we will find everything from cigars, coffee, local art and souvenirs.

At the Central Plaza, you will have forty minutes of free time to explore and photograph a city that has been a favorite of visitors for hundreds of years. Enjoy a beer or some Nicaraguan coffee, said to be among the best in the world. What makes Nicaragua so attractive to many visitors is the warmth and friendliness of the local people. Take some time to talk with the locals or just say Hola as you pass by. The last stop before leaving Granada will be a quick stop to the oldest train station in Central America.

Heading a little further north we will find the city of Masaya and one of the most colorful markets in the region, a must see stop for “Nica visitors”. From local handicrafts, leather goods, artistic weavings, hammocks, traditional clothing, this market has it all. You will have an hour to shop or relax and enjoy some lunch while taking in the sites.

On our way back to San Juan del Sur we will visit the Indian White Town of Catarina with a spectacular overlook view of Apoyo Lagoon. This dormant volcano, filled with water, has become a crater lake and a National Nature Reserve. One last opportunity for some memorable photos and a chance to stretch your legs.
