Project Description
… a relaxing, historical look at the original city of Leon, perfect for history buffs and those with an appreciation for archeology
Julio Tours Nicaragua will pick you up at your hotel at 9am, or at 2:30pm depending of your availability, From your hotel we will enjoy a 45 minute drive in a comfortable air conditioned vehicle to the first original town of Leon. Discovered in 1967, these ruins are one of the first Spanish settlements in the new world. Originating in 1524 at the foot of Momotombo Volcano, this archeological site is recognized by UNESCO and declared by law a Cultural Heritage of the Nation. Due to the continued eruptions of Momotombo, the most severe dating back to 1610, the site was found buried in ash and sand which kept the site very much intact. Today it remains a perfect representation of colonial architecture.
We will begin our discovery at the Museum of Imabite where we will see a significant collection of artifacts left behind when Momotombo erupted in 1610 and buried the entire city. We walk amongst the original walls and the plaza of Old Leon. We take a short hike to search for the perfect view of Momotombo, Managua Lake and Momotombito Volcano as well as other volcanoes in the distance.
